On a bleak Tuesday night in Los Angeles, stories of love, shame, addiction and fear interweave.
In January 2017, I was working hard on a script about a young squad of soldiers in the middle of the Vietnam War. Trying to mentally be in that time and world was very, um, depressing. So, I thought I'd take the day off and write something different. In less than an hour, I had the first draft for the first story of Hollow Bedrooms. Over the following weeks, other stories started to come out and intertwine, creating an ensemble - a fragmented vision of L.A.
Hollow Bedrooms is heavily influenced by the cruelty and boldness of the American New Wave. It is an observation of assured but damaged people and how they with withhold their trauma and their rage. They romanticize nostalgia and have no delusions of tidy resolutions. They are people well aware of their futures. The movie is simply a movie about people in Los Angeles.
